With so many products on the market its easy to get overwhelmed when trying to figure out what skin care you should be using, but the secret to beautiful skin is easy – its a solid daily routine! You'll be glad to know its not all about the expensive creams and serums as well, just adopt some of these simple habits to your daily routine and you should be well on your way towards better skin!
#1 Use the correct products for your skin type
It's no use having a daily skin care routine if the products don't suit your skin type – this could actually end up doing more harm than good. For oily skin types products that contain Salicylic Acid work great. Hyaluronic Acid will give a boost of hydration to dry skin types. For anti-ageing or pigmentation look for products containing Retinol, Vitamin A or Glycolic Acid.
#2 Keep hydrated
There are an incredible number of benefits to drinking enough water every day, and the difference it can make to your skin is amazing! Drinking water helps to keep your skin moisturised from the inside, it helps to rid your body of toxins, improves your complexion and increases your skins elasticity which will help to delay the signs of ageing. It can even help combat skin disorders like eczema or psoriasis.
#3 Having a healthy diet
We've all heard the expression 'You are what you eat” but when it comes to the health of your skin, the foods we choose to eat have more impact than you might think. Just as binge eating on takeaway and sweets can cause breakouts, a healthy diet full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants will do amazing things for the health of your skin. Think colourful fruits and veggies, healthy fats from salmon or mackerel, and of course a little chocolate to satisfy your sweet tooth (stick with 70% cacao or above for the most health benefits).
#4 Cleanse, tone and moisturise daily
Start and end each day with this basic routine and your skin will certainly thank you. Oil, pollution and makeup will sit on your skin throughout the day and if not properly cleansed can cause blocked pores, blemishes and even premature ageing. (I tend to do a double cleanse in the evening to ensure all nasty stuff that my skin has been exposed to during the day is washed away!) Next step is to tone. Going without a toner is like washing your hair but skipping conditioner – it can leave skin dehydrated and vulnerable. This will rebalance your skins pH and ensure your skin is squeaky clean. Lastly, moisturise. As we already know hydration is key to healthy skin! Opt for a gentle moisturiser designed for every day use without heavy fragrances that might irritate the skin.
#5 Wear sun protection every day -rain or shine!
Most people think they only need to wear sun cream on sunny days or holidays abroad when really it should be a part of our daily routine, whatever the weather! UV exposure is one of the biggest factors that contributes to the visible signs of ageing so wearing sun protection with an SPF of 30 or more is the best way to fight this. There are many ways to incorporate this to your routine from moisturisers, primers and setting sprays to the good, old fashioned sun cream. And if you want to go the extra mile, don't forget to protect your hands!
#6 Don't use too many products
Using too many products at one time can confuse the skin, it can be harsh and cause clogged pores and breakouts... just keep it simple!
#7 Hands off!
Your hands come into contact with all sorts of bacteria throughout the day. If this spreads to our face it could cause breakouts that lead to scarring and even an increase in fine lines and wrinkles :(
Our skin naturally regenerates and we loose around 50 million cells a day, but sometimes these hang around on our skins surface and leaves it looking dull. Exfoliating 2 or 3 times a week will help to prevent a build up of these cells that could leave to blocked pores and blemishes, and will promote a healthy, glowing complexion.
#9 Clean your makeup brushes regularly
Makeup brushes can easily get clogged up with dirt and bacteria, so it is vital to keep your makeup brushes clean if you want to prevent infection and breakouts. Wet the bristles with lukewarm water and massage in a drop of mild shampoo, rinse and repeat until clean. Avoid getting the rest of the brush wet as this could soften the glue and cause the bristles to fall out. Let the bristles dry by hanging them over the edge of a counter so the brush head doesn't loose its shape.
# 10 Good quality sleep
We all know that after a good nights sleep we wake up feeling refreshed and full of energy, but it can also have a great effect on your skin, leaving you with a brighter and more radiant complexion. Not only will getting your 8 hours each night help your skin, but you can get even more benefits from using a clean silk pillow case. The soft material can help prevent wrinkles and will also be more gentle on hair to avoid tangles and breakages. Better hair and skin all while you sleep – yes please!
